About The Island Tribune

The Island Tribune was founded in 1991 by journalist and editor Morten Hagen, who believed that Northaven's growing population and increasingly complex institutions required a newspaper that was prepared to report without fear or favour. Hagen's founding principle — that a small island nation needs rigorous independent journalism more, not less, than a large one — remains the editorial foundation of the Tribune today.

Over more than three decades, the Tribune has broken stories that shaped Northaven's public life: from planning corruption in the early 2000s, to the misappropriation of tourism funds in the Westport district, to our ongoing coverage of the governance questions surrounding Northaven's data infrastructure sector. We have faced legal challenges, political pressure, and on two occasions, direct approaches from public officials asking us not to publish. We have published on each occasion.

The Tribune is editorially independent. We accept no direction from government, political parties, commercial interests, or advertisers. Our funding comes from subscriptions, advertising governed by a strict separation-of-interests policy, and a small endowment established in 2008 to protect the paper's independence in perpetuity. We are a member of the Nordic Press Freedom Council.

Our Editorial Standards

The Tribune follows a strict code of editorial practice. We corroborate all significant factual claims with at least two independent sources before publication. We offer right of reply to all individuals and organisations named in critical reporting. We correct errors promptly and transparently. We protect the identity of confidential sources under all circumstances, including legal compulsion.

We believe that the press has obligations as well as freedoms. We do not publish material that would endanger individuals, compromise active law enforcement operations, or serve no purpose other than to cause harm. These judgements are made by the editor and are subject to review by an independent editorial board.

Elin Vangstad

Elin Vangstad

Senior Investigative Correspondent

Elin Vangstad joined the Tribune in 2012 following a period at the Westport Gazette, where she covered local government and planning. She has since built a reputation as one of Northaven's most rigorous investigative journalists, with a particular focus on the intersection of corporate power and public governance. Her series Behind the Curtain has twice been recognised by the Nordic Press Freedom Council.

Elin was the lead journalist on the Tribune's coverage of the Ministry for National Unity surveillance story in 2025. She continues to report on data governance, political accountability, and the Grovik rights question.

Editorial Independence — A Note

In an era when the funding models for independent journalism are under sustained pressure, the Tribune has made a deliberate choice to remain small, focused, and independent. We are not part of a media group. We have no shareholders seeking a return. Our obligation is to our readers and to the public interest, and to those obligations alone.

If you have information you believe the public should know about, we want to hear from you. We protect sources absolutely. Our contact details are on the Contact page.
